During law school at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Doug Welch worked for the Federal Public Defender’s Capital Habeas Unit, solidifying his desire to work as a public defender. His first job after law school was at a small non-profit where he continued to work on post-conviction death penalty cases for two years before getting his “dream job” of being a public defender in San Francisco. Most of Doug’s tenure at the office has been in the Felony Unit, where he tried dozens of cases, before doing a rotation in Youth Defender Unit. Doug currently co-manages the Felony Unit, and energized by the creativity and passion of the attorneys he supervises.
